Russia’s stance on terrorism is a very odd position. While local terrorist attacks occur almost weekly in southern Russia (and have been since the 1980′s), Russia denies any aid from other nations, particularily the United States. The also remain nuetral on America’s counter terrorism operations, and do not want to participate in the Afgan mission, as this could “grant [the] Taliban the right to invade Central Asia”, said by Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia. He also said that “no matter who was behind the terrorist acts in the USA on September 11, this [the invitation of Russia to participate in Afganistan] was favorable for the USA and aimed against Russia”.
Western countries hold a double standard on Russia’s stance against terrorism. On the one hand, they have decried the terrorist attacks. On the other hand, they have condemned Russia’s anti-terror operations in Chechnya. The ambiguous attitude may complicate international efforts to fight terrorism and impede their effectiveness.

Having been born in Russia, I have a good understanding of this issue. Russian position regarding its sovereignty is very important. Even though foreign assistance with terrorism might seem productive, in terms of Russian perspective, it is the responsibility of Russia not other nations to deal with the internal problem. Also there is still mistrust between Russia and NATO member states. I believe it is essential to build a good relationship between Russia and NATO member states, these counties have much in common, however this must be done slowly and from both sides, and with the greatest of respect for each others feelings. I now consider Canada as my home, however Russia still holds a special place in my heart, I hope Canada could be a part of this vision.
