Nuclear energy is a very controversial subject for some people. Last year Saskatchewanians had a contentious debate about whether to adopt nuclear energy or not. The energy source’s association with warheads sometimes gives it a worse name than it deserves, especially from an emissions standpoint. On the other hand, nuclear energy is hard to responsibly store. Given that the main concern for environmentalists right now is curbing greenhouse gas emissions, is nuclear energy not a viable alternative to coal and gas?
Nuclear is one of the best ways to produce energy cleanly and on a mass scale. Nuclear is one of the lowest GHG emitting energy sources, right down their with solar, wind, and hydro (Source: http://www.p2pays.org/ref/37/36486.pdf).
There are many challenges with safely storing waste, but this video does a decent job of explaining the process: http://www.nwmo.ca/home?language=en_CA. There is some level of trust you must place in technology, I wont deny that. Other energy industries, simply emit their waste into the air. The nuclear industry tracks, contains, and manages it, which I’d argue is much better.
At the end of the day, nuclear energy does not work for many geographic regions (likely not Saskatchewan). The economics depend largely on its location and the number of people/energy requirement it is meant to serve.
Finally, at the risk of being cliche, I will suggest that there is no one energy source that will help us meet increasing energy demand. The world needs to harness multiple energy sources and make them work together.
nuclear energy isnt a good thing to go for.. yes it has less emissions than coal or other fossil fuels.. but the environmental impact that is left when the toxic waste is not looked after properly. hydro isnt even good.. the environmental impact that is made when you flood an area, your removing animals and plants from their habitat. we dont think of things in this manner.. we are too busy thinking about the profits and not the impact that is made on the environment. the best way is wind.. yes people say they look ugly but to me i rather have the windmills on the horizon than not being able to see the horizon. they are a sight of an advanced people. all i know is that nuclear is too dangerous to use, due to the fact is leaves behind a dangerous waste that mutates and leaves places inhospitable. think green.. solar, wind, and in stream hydro turbines. (say NO to DAMS)
What about nuclear facilities that store waste safely? Finland is known for its proper storange of nuclear waste.
what happens when these facilities are full? they build more? so what happens when someone gets lazy to do their job.. a major leak.. its too risky to put the Lands health in the hands of lead and concrete.
Clayton, in some countries, modern storage facilities are built to extremely high standards. It is widely known that solar and wind do not produce enough energy for most societies. We definitely need more wind and solar (I think most people among our generation would like to see bigger investments than we are currently seeing), but it is simply not realistic for advanced societies to solely rely on these sources for the next few decades. I am hopeful, however, that technology eventually improves to the point we can rely on multiple renewable sources.
yeh if they were built so advanced, why did that storage pond break in Hungary?… i guess they aint so advanced. all i can say is that i would rather rely on solar and wind than nuclear due to the fact that they have no harmful side.
Hungary is a post-Communist country, far behind North America, western Europe and Scandinavia in terms of safety, technology, etc.
In principle, I don’t think many people would disagree with you about wanting to rely more on renewable energy sources versus those which are extracted. I personally don’t believe we’ll be ready for that for at least a couple decades, but I’ll be delighted if I’m proven wrong.
I did some research on this topic, I believe that there will always be a balance of all energy sources, however some will become more dominant and others less as the time passes. I believe that nuclear energy will become the dominant source of energy in the future.
Today, nuclear reactors are powered using fission technology, where energy is produced by splitting an atom. Today, strong research is conducted to develop a fusion reactor, where energy is released from the bonding of atoms together. This source of energy would allow production of large amounts of energy and at the same time reduce the waste associated with nuclear energy.
A good explanation of the reason why fusion is clean is described on Wikipedia under safety and environment, accident potential: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_power#Safety_and_the_environment
The US and Europe (France) has strong research in this field. Russia is planning to build 30 new reactors in the future. I think Canada should also fund more research in this area.
Canada should work more closely with other countries to help overcome the current energy shortages and provide solutions to Global Warming theory (if that is the case). Canada is an Energy exporter and we should focus on research and not fall behind.
